[edit] Merits of Including Service Menu Details
I don't like it. The whole attitude towards modifying the SM has become very cavalier in the last month. Perhaps the rationale can be public demand, but this is all still very dangerous. I know some will skim over the details on here or on the AVS threads and they'll soon be asking how to fix their (near)brick. It's happening already on AVS. I believe certain people, in their zeal to anoint themselves 'Sammy answer man', have allowed their egos to override their sense of responsibility to the community.
That said, much of this section is not written in a style consistent with the rest of the FAQ, i.e., it reads more like a AVS forum post. I'd fix it myself if I wasn't so opposed to the content in principal. --Mfenech 03:14, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Someone already opened the barn door by adding the Service menu access code sometime back in September. We know some should not go there but people can get the access info from this site, enter the SM to find their panel hours and once in there the curious could decide to venture further and trigger a calibration or change values that shouldnt be changed.
It would be to our benefit to know more about this area as presently we are all in the dark as far as the SM is concerned but there are one or two on the AVS site changing settings and values indiscriminately without even knowing what area of the plasma some of the settings relate to. --Benjamin2 03:20, 28 March 2008 (CDT)
- I agree with Mike that the style of this article has to be changed. It's too informal, like a forum post as Mike says. As to whether or not SM settings should be detailed here, I think it should. Why? Because information by itself is not dangerous. It's what you do with it that makes it dangerous. If you do nothing with this information, it's entertaining and interesting to read and fun to speculate and even inquire Samsung techs about (if you get one to visit your house). If you use this information on your display -- ignoring all warnings and danger signs -- then it's your own foolishness. There are many examples of this in society, not just this corner of the web, and I don't think we need to cater to the least common denominator of moron. I'll try to fix up the style of the article this weekend. --Eric H. Jung 13:29, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] ISF
Eric, have you heard of anyone getting their set ISF'd and posting the changes on AVS? Is anyone in communication with zippy to see what he's done lately? --Mfenech 22:13, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- No, I haven't heard of anyone doing that. Since Zippy's been banned from AVS, I'm not sure how we can contact him, and I don't know of anyone else in contact with him. I periodically patrol the other Samsung plasma topics at AVS (the threads dedicated to the FP-T6374, FP-T5884, and FP-T5084 but don't recall seeing anyone discussing their calibration. However, I didn't read those thread in entirety. By the way, do you know why Zippy was banned? --grimholtz 22:45, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
Zippy's banning was from some personal attack he made in another forum. It's linked somewhere on the main Sammy thread. This was way before I got involved in the Sammy's - I've only read about it. Maybe eghill has been in contact? Also, what happened to ht-naimee? --Mfenech 02:02, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Hotel Mode
Mike, I see you removed the comments about Hotel Mode not locking not volume and channel. Did you enable Hotel Mode? How do you know volume and channel are locked down in Hotel Mode? --grimholtz 05:49, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
I think by the description it implies just settings and input are locked, not vol and channel. If it isn't clear in that respect, please change it. --Mfenech 07:40, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
