[edit] Where can I find the panel's total display time?

Please read this.

[edit] What do new firmware releases do?

Firmware is software that is embedded on the circuit boards of your display. Samsung periodically releases updates to their firmware to fix bugs and/or issue improvements. Here is a summary of known bug fixes:

For the Samsung 720p displays (xx64, xx54, and xx34)

  • Release 1024 fixes a problem with HDMI connection dropping
  • Release 1035 fixes a problem with Audio drop-out.
  • Release 1039 fixes Judder.

[edit] What's the latest firmware revision?

1039 for TLIL and TCAL boards, 1010 for TLIV boards, and 1021 for TSAF boards. Revisions 1039 and 1010 fix the judder issue for most 720p models (xx34, xx54, and xx64) however, at this time there is no 1039/1010 firmware update for the 4254 and 4234 TLIV models. It's unclear at this time what 1021 for the TSAF fixes.

[edit] How can I get the newest firmware revision?

You can download firmware revisions from the Samsung Plasma TV FAQ Firmware Library.

Alternatively, you can call Samsung Customer Care at 1-800-Samsung (1-800-726-7864, option 5,1,1) between 7am-7pm CT, 7 days/week, and arrange to download a firmware update from Samsung directly to your computer. You can also have a USB flash drive containing the firmware update shipped to you. Have the model number and serial number of your TV on hand when you call. Samsung will not release the firmware without a serial number. If you choose to download the update you must have an email address and a USB flash drive, thumb drive, or some other USB memory device.

Samsung will treat any request for firmware as a service call. They will confirm you have a problem which requires a firmware revision before giving one out. If you don't have a problem with your display or if you cannot otherwise convince Samsung to provide you with a firmware update, just use the revision in the firmware library that applies to your TV.

If you obtain firmware not in the library, please consider uploading it on the wiki for all to share.

[edit] How do I download Software from the Samsung website?

Samsung support will email you an temporary user ID and password, along with directions to their download site. The ID is only valid for one week, so don't wait to perform the download.

[edit] How do I upgrade my display's firmware?

  1. Download the appropriate firmware from the Firmware Library.
  2. Connect a blank USB drive to your PC.
  3. Open the EXE file saved in step 1.
  4. Click [Run] and an extractor window will open.
  5. Click [Browse] and select the USB drive and click [unzip]. You should see a dialog box indicating the files have been unzipped successfully. Click [OK]. A folder containing the firmware files is now added to your USB drive.
  6. Safely disconnect the USB drive by right clicking the green check mark on the task bar and then left click [Safely Remove].
  7. Read the Samsung Firmware Upgrade Guide (2-page pdf) carefully before proceeding with the firmware update.

SUMMARY: UNZIP THE FILE AND COPY THE UNZIPPED FOLDERS/FILES TO THE USB MEMORY DRIVE. THERE IS NO NEED TO COPY THE EXE/ZIP FILE TO THE MEMORY DRIVE.

[edit] Do I need to upgrade to intermediate firmware versions before upgrading to the latest version?

No, you can upgrade directly to the latest firmware version without upgrading first to older versions.

[edit] Most commonly asked questions on Firmware downloads and install process

Q:How large of a USB memory drive would I need to upgrade my TV? A: The Samsung website states "You would need a USB memory drive with at least 64 MB (Megabytes) of memory." However, since firmware updates are nowhere near this size, it's likely that a smaller capacity drive would work.

Q:I'm getting an Error Messaage: No file available to upgrade. Please check it and retry. A: Check the file name of the firmware upgrade on the USB memory drive. No firmware, improper firmware, or the wrong firmware can cause this error.

Q:I'm getting an Error Message: No USB connected. Please check connection and try again. A: Remove the USB drive from the USB jack, then insert it again. Make sure you insert the drive in the correct relation to the USB socket and you push it all the way into the USB jack until fully seated.

Q:After I upgraded the fireware the TV won't turn on automatically or I can't turn it on when I press the power button. A: Unplug power to the TV for ten seconds and plug it back in. The TV should upgrade with a blank screen and then turn on automatically. The entire process should take about one minute.

Q: Getting either: No USB connected or No file available to upgrade. A: If the above methods don't work, one last option you can try is a different memory stick. Newer isn't always better. I had a new memory stick (1GB) from a no-name company not work. Tried everything above including re-copying the files and got nowhere. Last ditch effort I tried out a 4 year old 256MB (SanDisk) memory stick, and it worked like a charm. (Update: Had the same problem (unable to detect USB), solution is format the USB drive to FAT before unzip. Not FAT32, not NTFS. Just FAT.)

HINT: NEVER remove power to your set during a firmware upgrade! It can potentially make the set inoperable!

[edit] HELP... I lost power during my Firmware upgrade now my TV won't turn on!

PROBLEM: While in the process of installing a firmware upgrade you had a power failure and lost power to the TV, or you unplugged the USB memory drive while the firmware upgrade was in process, or you accidentally turned the power off during the upgrade… and now the TV won't turn on or off.

SOLUTION: Follow these steps:

  1. Remove the USB memory drive.
  2. Unplug the TV for ten seconds.
  3. Re-insert the USB memory drive.
  4. Plug the TV back into power.
  5. Press the power button.
  6. At this point the Firmware upgrade should begin.

NOTE: The TV screen will be blank during the upgrade process. The entire process should take about one minute. After the upgrade completes the TV should turn on automatically. If the TV does not complete the upgrade or does not turn on automatically, please contact Samsung Customer Care at 1-800-726-7864 for assistance.

[edit] Audio drop-out

Some older firmware revisions for the 720p models (xx64, xx54, and xx34) included a bug whereby audio would go silent after some period. This occurred over HDMI connections only. The only methods to resume audio were to reseat the HDMI cable from the television or source device, to cycle the sources on the television (to "refresh" its status), to toggle the SRS sound function from off to on or vice versa, or to power cycle the television. This bug was fixed in firmware revision 1024. If you are experiencing this problem and you have one of these displays, upgrade to the latest firmware revision.

[edit] Samsung FAQ/Knowledge Base

Click here then select Plasma TV from the Pull Down to search the Samsung Plasma TV FAQ's. Information in the Samsung FAQ/Knowledge Base is questionable -- and sometimes incorrect -- as a number of the FAQ's are outdated. For example, Samsung's website claims the 5064 has two 10-watt speakers, but the manual and other sources correctly state the 5064 has two 15-watt speakers.
