[edit] xx34 and xx54

The xx54 and xx34 both have the same anti-glare filter, while the xx64's anti-glare filter is more opaque (see comparison). Optimal settings for the xx34/xx54 and the xx64 are slightly different.

[edit] Break-In and Low Hours Settings

These settings are highly recommended for the break-in period. They will be noticeably darker than expected for normal viewing.

[edit] Post Break-In Settings

After the break-in period, you can increase settings. However, for long-term protection, avoid Torch Mode type settings.

Each column of settings in this section is tuned for a specific video source. Using these settings with a different video source may not yield the intended picture quality.

Important: Note the firmware version for each column. Using these settings on a different firmware version will likely result in poor picture quality.

Comments None I have settled in on these settings now for 1039 firmware. I use these on all inputs: DirecTV HD, HD DVD, and PS3. Only exception is Birghtness drops a few notches for regular TV watching on Direct HD. None 300+ Hours. A bit more punchy than typical settings. If you think your picture looks flat, try these. These settings are for a bedroom. Personal preference. My settings are used for the Playstation 3, both for games and Blu-Ray movies.

[edit] Break-In and Low Hours Settings

The xx54 low-hour settings can be applied to a xx64 TV for the break-in period.

CNET's HP-T5064 review sample calibrated settings.

You can use the xx54 post break-in settings on the xx64, but be advised that the xx64 has a thicker, more opaque anti-glare filter than the xx54. Images may appear duller than anticipated.

Slingbox's settings:

  • picture=Movie mode
  • contrast=below 50
  • brightness=below 50
  • Noise reduction=off
  • Blacks=off
  • Viewing=Stay on HD channels,NO sidebars,NO video gaming ,NO fixed logos

"I do recommend Discovery HD for break in viewing pleasure. 10 hours a day 10 days later you 5084 will be broken in."

Keep in mind that Discovery HD DOES have 4 x 3 Programs that will not stretch and leave you nice black bars on the side while you are at work.

[edit] Available Picture Setting Options

This section describes when picture settings are available and when they are disabled.

[edit] DNIe

Not supported in Movie Mode1.

DNIe (Digital Natural Image engine) This exclusive Samsung technology is marketed to dramatically improve the picture by enhancing the contrast, detail, white balance and by reducing noise. It does this by modifying the original signal, and while it might look better to some people, it does not present an accurate image. For detailed movie watching where the original content is important to be shown as intended, turn on movie mode to disable all modification techniques.

[edit] Detailed Settings

Not available in Dynamic or when Game mode is on. Also not available if DNIe is set to Off in Standard mode. Detailed settings include: Black Adjust, Dynamic Contrast, Color Space, White Balance, My Color Control, Gamma, and Edge Enhancement. According to Samsung, these are the effects of the detailed settings:

  • R-Offset: Adjusts the red color darkness.
  • G-Offset: Adjusts the green color darkness.
  • B-Offset: Adjusts the blue color darkness.
  • R-Gain: Adjusts the red color brightness.
  • G-Gain: Adjusts the green color brightness.
  • B-Gain: Adjusts the blue color brightness.

[edit] Active Color

Available in Dynamic Mode only. In Standard or Movie Modes, or when Game Mode is on, the Active Color automatically changes to Off and it is deactivated. When Active Color is on, blue and green colors become more vivid.

[edit] Color Tone

Color Tone selects the color Temperature of the whole picture.

Warm1, Warm2, Cool1, Cool2, or Normal Color Tones can be selected, however Warm1 and Warm2 are available only in Movie mode.

  • Normal: Keeps whites white.
  • Cool1: Makes whites bluish.
  • Cool2: Makes the colour temperature bluer than "Cool1"
  • Warm1: Makes whites reddish.
  • Warm2: Makes the colour temperature redder than "Warm1" * Closest setting to 6500k thus the most accurate as compared to the reference material filmed. (In other words, use this mode for movies if you want to watch them how the directors intended)

[edit] Just Scan

Just Scan is only available when the input signal to the display is 1080i DTV, 1080i and 1080p signals through the HDMI jack, or 1080i and 1080p signals through the Component jacks. More Info.

[edit] Aspect Ratios, Resolutions, Zoom, and Wide Fit

  • In TV, VIDEO, S-VIDEO, and COMPONENT (480i, 480p) modes, all screen modes can be selected (16:9 - Zoom1 - Zoom2 - 4:3).
  • In COMPONENT (720p, 1080i) or HDMI (720p, 1080i) mode, 16:9, 4:3 and Wide Fit can be selected [1].
  • 480i over HDMI is not supported at all.

[edit] Xbox 360

Some people say that to get the best image from Xbox 360, connect to TV using VGA cable, and set X360 resolution to 1024x768 on the 42" Samsung plasma and set to 1360x768 on the 50" plasma. This way the xbox is outputing the native rate of the panel for pixel perfect 1:1. Alternatively, for Xbox 360 Elite or newer revisions of Xbox 360 with HDMI connection, connect the Xbox 360 using the HDMI cable, then set the resolution to auto-select, which will automatically adjust the resolution to the display's native resolution, or set it to 720p with Just-Scan display setting.
